Two for one in this workshop! We'll teach you the technology of two popular "Trick Marionettes" used in 19th century Czech cabaret-style performances.
Four Dancers: This ingenious puppet has four marionettes on one controller. Pull one string and all four marionettes lift their leg! See how this puppet is manipulated and learn its very complicated stringing. We'll show you copies of 120 year old antique Czech puppets.
Stomper: Discover how to make this simple, very effective marionette! Its technology consists of a carved head attached to a fabric body that lets it stretch up or shrink down. The Stomper is unique to the Czechs, and traditionally all puppet shows ended with this character.
During the workshop, we will also talk about the rich tradition and variety of Czech cabaret puppets, very popular in the 19th century.
About our Spring Weekend Workshop Series
This workshop is part of our online Weekend Workshop Series, started in Fall 2020. This spring, we are offering 4 workshops - see the list below.
Each workshop lasts two hours and will take place on Zoom. You will receive a video of the workshop afterwards which will be available online for 1 month, plus all of the diagrams presented in the workshop. There will be a chance to interact with the teachers after each workshop for questions or clarifications. A great way to learn new skills and meet people from around the world also interested in puppetry.
These demos are designed for people who want to refresh their knowledge of puppet making as well as people who are new to the field. Our workshops aim to bring together puppeteers, students, and lovers of this craft together to teach new skills.
